Shir Hever compares the world of founding Prime Minister Ben Gurion, who
pushed a collective spirit and built an Israeli security elite, to that
of populist Benjamin Netanyahu, who has profited from the spoils of
colonialism while building a cult of personality.

Since mid-June, as collective punishment, the police have been harassing residents of al-’Esawiyah over alleged stone[throwing]. On 27 June 2019, when police harassed residents, young men threw stones at them, incl. one – Muhammad ‘Abeid, 21 – who shot firecrackers at them. A policeman shot a live round at ‘Abeid, hitting him in the chest. The police pursued residents who were taking ‘Abeid for medical attention, snatched him and took him to the hospital themselves, where he was pronounced dead. The police harassment of al-’Esawiyah residents, including ‘Abeid’s killing, is an inseparable part of Israel’s policy in East Jerusalem designed to secure a Jewish majority in the city.

This morning, Monday, July 22, 2019, the Israeli authorities began demolishing buildings in the neighborhood of Wadi al-Humos, the eastern extension of Zur Baher in East Jerusalem. The move came after the Israeli Supreme Court rejected the residents’ appeal and ruled there was no legal barrier to the demolitions. Israel intends to demolish a total of 13 buildings, including at least 14 apartments, the vast majority of which are in various stages of construction. Until this morning, the buildings were home to two families including 17 people, of which 11 are minors. Some of them were built in Area A, with building permits issued by the Palestinian Authority, which holds planning powers in those areas. Wadi al-Humos is outside of Jerusalem’s municipal boundary and constitutes the main land reserve for the development of Zur Baher. The Zur Baher committee estimates that 6,000 people currently live in that neighborhood – a quarter of the total population of Zur Baher.

Amnesty International yesterday slammed Israeli authorities for the mass
demolition of Palestinian homes in Sur Baher, and urged the
international community to take action.

Molly Amster of Jews United for Justice explains why the concentration
camp analogy is more than just rhetoric when it comes to Trump's
detention camps and policies

Theater, cinema and artistic creation often shape our social
consciousness and influence public discourse. The national traumas, even
those in dispute, usually take on a stage in culture and art. But it
seems that the affair of the abduction of the children from the East,
Balkan, Yemen has not yet received a proper place in mainstream culture.
One of the only plays that focuses on this affair is "May God Comfort
You" (Winner of the Music Prize at the Acco Festival 2018) by Maya
Buenos.

On 16 June 2019, ‘Imad Abu Shamsiyeh – a resident of the Palestinian
neighborhood of Tel Rumeidah in Hebron – suffered a sunstroke. In the
middle of the night, his wife called an ambulance for him but the
Israeli military would not allow it into the neighborhood. After a
lengthy delay, the EMT staff decided to evacuate Abu Shamsiyeh on foot, a
task accomplished only after further argument with the soldiers. This
case demonstrates contempt for the health of a patient in need of urgent
medical care and clearly illustrates the extent to which Israel
controls all aspects of Palestinians’ lives in Hebron. It shows how, for
Palestinians, even the most commonplace tasks involve difficulties and
uncertainty and, above all, no control over the situation.

As you may have noticed, Israel is currently engulfed in a wave of
protests by Black Jews of Ethiopian descent, outraged at state-sponsored
racism, and especially by police brutality, against their community.
I’ve extensively reported on these complaints… [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEfxI...
] … and while it’s important to identify these injustices, any
authentic anti-racist position must be intersectional, and speak out
against all the forms of discrimination in this country. These include
not only white supremacy, but also Jewish supremacy… [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9h1x...
] … And one of the ways the struggle against white supremacy in Israel
is neutered is by convincing Black Jews that although they occupy the
bottom rung of Israel’s pigmentocracy, at least they’re treated better
than non-Jews. And this is how they get told. H/T to Daat Emet [ Hebrew

Hundreds of children of foreign workers' families, who were born in
Israel and live there, received deportation orders from the country.
Some of the Mothers were even arrested themselves. As far as the Israeli
government is concerned, they must be deported and replaced by other
women without children, in order to meet the needs of the Israeli
economy. This week (24/6), Habimah Square in Tel Aviv was filled with
over 1,000 Israeli children parents and teachers who expressed
solidarity with the families of foreign workers and called on the
government to let them stay in Israel.
